Varsity is an event that is held once a year giving our teams the opportunity to compete against their counterparts from another institution. The university that wins the most points during this event will be crowned the winners and given the RoeBuck trophy to display until we next meet. Our Varsity opponents are the University of Roehampton and we have been competing against them since 2013. Each university takes turns in hosting, with the event in 2023 being hosted by the University of Roehampton. The event, usually held over a week, culminates in a day where supporters from the University of Roehampton and BNU watch the bulk of the fixtures being played, with the last fixture finishing at 10:00pm. Then the day finishes at the respective Students' Union bar where both universities' staff, players and supporters come together to watch the cup ceremony.
We could not contain our excitement for the first Away Varsity since 2019. We started on Saturday 18 March with Dance comp. On Sunday 26 March we had our men's and women's hockey teams taking to the field. Then it was all systems go as our clubs took up their positions ready to give their best performance in all their Varsity fixtures on Wednesday 29 March.
It was a fantastic effort this year with memorable wins from our netball 1st team, men's football 1st team, men's rugby, and a dominant display from our men’s volleyball team. Despite all of our teams’ valiant efforts, we ended the day losing 8-6 to Roehampton so the RoeBuck trophy heads to the University of Roehampton for the first time in 5 years.
Don’t forget you can view the results from all the games that took place this year and start looking forward to an incredible home day next year as we take to the fields to claim back the title.
