Joining Sports

Why join a sport?

’re fun. Sports like to be social and are fantastic places to meet new people outside of your classes. It’s also a great way to stay fit and healthy.

How do I join a sport?

To join a sport you simply sign-up online via the 'Students Activities' section, head to 'Sport' and then click on the club you wish to join. You will then be able to purchase your FREE membership. Joining a sports is free as it is part of the ‘Big Deal’ and the best part is, you can join as many sport clubs as you would like

Who can join a sport?

All years can join a sport, no matter whether you are a full-time or part-time student, regardless of your age or if you’ve previously been involved with that sport before. All sports, here at Bucks, are non-discriminatory and welcoming of everyone.

When can I join a sport?

There is never a bad time to join a sport! Early October is when most students join a sport as this is the start of the competitive season and training. However, many students join Sports through-out the whole year and this is not unusual. Sports love to get more members involved and always enjoy to chance to meet someone new.

I've never taken part in the activity before, can I still join?

Of course! University is the time to get involved and try new activities that you’ve never done before. Everyone has to start somewhere and there’s no time better than now.

What should I expect when I join a sport?

Joining a competitive sport is great fun. You will meet lots of new people who are involved in sports. The clubs are student led by a committee who are elected in. Training and sporting fixtures are organised throughout the first two terms and in some cases in the 3rd term too. Training nights will vary from sport to sport. Most sports that compete in BUCS will play on Wednesday afternoons. Other disciplines may compete on a weekend.

How do I get in contact with a sport?

Firstly try their contact email on their sport page. If this is not working, try finding their social media pages as this is where many sports share information.

I've joined a sport but I have not heard from them, what should I do?

Try to get in contact with them if they haven’t got in contact with you. Firstly try their contact email on their sport page. If this is not working, you can also contact the Sports office in the Students' Union.

Memberships

What is expected of me as a member?

There is a level of commitment required when joining a sports team as training and fixtures happen weekly. You will need to be signed up to the website to be covered by the University insurance.

How long does my membership last for?

You have to re-new your Sport membership each academic year but it’s completely FREE to do!

Committees

How are committees created?

The Students’ Union has a democratic approach with its student groups. All committees must be elected in so that its members are able to have a say in the future of their sport. Elections for the position of Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Captain normally occur around March each year.

How do I become a committee member?

All Sports elect the committee every March. To be on committee, read the committee profiles; to see what you think you’d enjoy, and then nominate yourself once the nominations are open. To be on committee you must be elected into your role, so to do this you may need to persuade members to vote for you. If you win, you’re on the committee!

How do I stand in an election?

At certain times of the year, you can nominate yourself for committee. Please find the step-by-step guide showing you how to do so.

What is Athletic Union Council?

Athletic Union Council is for the committee members of all of our sports to meet up once a month to find out information from the Students’ Union and to feedback to the Union how they want sport to run. This is a compulsory meeting for all Chairs but anyone is welcome to attend.

Issues and Improvements

I have some thoughts and suggestions about sport; what do I do?

We are always keen to improve the running of sport at the Students’ Union and sometimes a fresh viewpoint can really help. Feel free to let us know by emailing sport@bucks.ac.uk

How do I suggest things to the new committee?

If you don’t say then they won’t know what you’re thinking so it’s always worth suggesting your idea to them, it might be an idea that will drastically benefit your club.

What if I have a problem with the sport?

Sports are not perfect and sometimes there are some problems. If you feel that there is a problem, it is more than fair to let us know and we will try to help you the best we can.
