School Aid is a registered charity with 19 years’ experience of sending high quality recycled educational materials to schools in disadvantaged communities in several countries in sub-Saharan Africa.  This internship gives a hands-on opportunity for developing initial management skills in a friendly volunteer environment while getting broad experience of a small not-for-profit business with international contacts. 

Hours:  This part-time position is up to 15 hours per week, 3 regular days a week (days to be agreed) during core warehouse hours if 09.00 to 17.00, Monday to Thursday.

Salary: Is paid at national living wage.

Description of role:  The Volunteer Coordinator/Intern will be responsible for assisting with the smooth operation of the warehouse and supervision of the warehouse volunteers. The Intern will report to the Operations Manager on site.  Training will be provided.

Key tasks:

Regular

  • Assist with opening up and closing down the warehouse operation each working day 
  • Assist with the collection/delivery/unloading of donated UK goods, liaising with Warehouse Manager on collections.
  • Co-ordinate communication with volunteers.
  • Assist with the general administration in the office.
  • Co-ordinate with the liaison between School Aid and UK equipment donors.
  • Co-ordinate volunteer training and induction.
  • Assist the efficient sorting and packing of materials by volunteers
  • Co-ordinate a safe, comfortable, orderly work environment for volunteers, and motivate volunteers through encouragement, and feedback.
  • Ensure that School Aid Health & Safety policy is being implemented.
  • Continuously review processes and procedures, and make recommendations for improvements to the Manager
  • Overseeing and promoting volunteer welfare.

Periodic

  • Represent School Aid at appropriate events

Requirements and key skills

  • Good organisational skills with materials, tasks and people
  • Good oral communication and motivational skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to multi-task
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to carry out manual handling tasks
  • Confident in IT skills: Word, Excel, e-mail etc
