Making life better for students at Bucks

Here at Bucks we want to break the stigma around mental health. We started two days before World Mental Health Day (10 October) to get people to start talking about it. I ran the campaign ‘Break the Stigma’ across our two campuses with the help from Ellie, High Wycombe and Uxbridge. We had stalls from our Advice Centre, Wellbeing Support and our Counselling Service. I have asked people to make a pledge to ‘Break the Stigma’ by physically breaking our stigma sticks. Having sticks that people physically broke, made them more likely to pledge.

It was so lovely to have so many people stopping and asking questions. Ellie and I had decorated the ‘stigma sticks’, and we had 200 people pledge to try and break the stigma with us on the first day, so I cannot wait to see how many pledges we have by the end of the week.

We know it can be difficult to have the conversation about mental health. However, with the support and community we have here at Bucks, nothing should stand in the way of opening up and breaking the barriers down around mental health issues.

I have pledged to Break the Stigma so can you.

Brooke Pilbeam, Vice President Education and Welfare.
