Making life better for students at Bucks

Our aim for this year is the break the stigma around mental health at Bucks. It was kick started on World Mental Health Day (10 October). I ran the campaign ‘Break the Stigma’ across our two campuses, High Wycombe and Uxbridge. We had stalls from our Advice Centre, Wycombe Mind and our Counselling Service. I had the idea of people pledging to ‘Break the Stigma’ physically. Having sticks that people physically broke, would make people more likely to pledge.

It was so lovely to have so many people stopping and asking questions. Ellie Freeman had decorated the ‘stigma sticks’, and we had 200 people pledge to try and break the stigma with us.

Later on this year we will be releasing mental health videos from students and staff sharing their personal experiences. Starting the conversation about mental health isn’t easy. However, with the support and community at Bucks, nothing should stand in the way of opening up and breaking the barriers down around mental health issues.
