Description:

In this inaugural lecture, Prof Adetoro Adeyemi Adegoke explores one of the most pressing issues of our time why health inequalities persist

What if the greatest challenge facing our health systems is not a lack of services, but how those services are designed, delivered, and experienced?

In this inaugural lecture, Professor Adetoro Adeyemi Adegoke explores one of the most pressing issues of our time: why health inequalities persist, and what it will take to meaningfully address them. Drawing on her work across communities, health systems, and policy spaces, she challenges the conventional focus on individual behaviour and instead reframes inequality as a product of structural and systemic design.

At the heart of the lecture is a powerful proposition: health equity cannot be achieved through isolated interventions - it must be delivered at scale through transformed systems. Professor Adegoke will introduce a bold and practical framework for “Health Equity at Scale,” demonstrating how trust, community engagement, and system redesign can work together to improve access, experience, and outcomes for marginalised populations.

Through compelling real-world examples - including community-based models that bring care directly to households - this lecture will highlight how the “margins” of society provide critical insights into how systems function, and where they fail.

This lecture is both a reflection on a distinguished academic and leadership journey, and a call to action for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and communities to rethink how health systems can be designed to work for everyone. Inaugural lectures are celebration of our academics’ outstanding research excellence and an achievement of contributions to their field of research. These celebratory events will enable the University to come together to give conferment to academics who have achieved the accolade of Professorship.

This is your chance to ask questions and delve deeper into the topics discussed. Everyone is welcome and these lectures are free to attend.

Inaugural Lectures are recorded and can be viewed in the series link on the website.
