An update from your LGBTQ+ Officers

In semester two we started off with a bang with LGBTQ+ History Month. Lots of planning went into this to offer educational talks, a society stall at beats each Friday, online content on socials, and our big event with Nursing Society ‘Drag for RAG’ I want to thank everyone who got involved and supported any of these events, especially during ‘Drag for RAG’ as we raised over £200 for charity!

This semester continues to be a busy month with campaign ideas in the process built around improving the University’s standing in internet inclusion ratings, and meeting with the University Inclusion and Diversity team to work towards achieving this. It feels like an exciting time ahead as we work towards developing an inclusion in sport campaign with the Vice President Student Involvement, which I hope will be in place for freshers next year, allowing new students to feel comfortable in joining sports and societies.

If you require any support in developing some inclusivity ideas within your sport/society, please get in touch.

Recently a campaign around pronouns I put forward to the Students’ Union has been adopted and pronoun badges will soon be available from the reception area ‘help your shelf’. I hope this will help develop a conversation around pronouns and boost confidence in asking about preferred pronouns to assist in inclusion.

The date for student pride in London was changed from originally being in February to now taking place in April from Friday 8 to Sunday 10. There are still tickets available through the What’s On page if you’d like to attend.

I’m waiting for a few campaign ideas to be approved, but for insight, I’m hoping to achieve:

  • Rainbow cake on sale at catering venues with % of sales going to LGBTQ+ charities
  • BNU pride event to encourage better relationships with the local Wycombe community
  • Inclusivity in sport campaign

BNU pride will be adopted next year to give us time to plan effectively, with a working group being set up, so we can launch this as the best it can be!

In the meantime, High Wycombe pride has been confirmed as Saturday 20 August.

Thank you for all your continued support. If you’d like to get in touch about anything, please drop me an email on sulgbtqofficer@bucks.ac.uk
