Beth's April update

banner

Welcome back to another update of my 25/26 elected officer term where each month, I provide an update summarising what I have been up to that month.

April was a busy month across the board, so let’s get stuck right into the April update!

Areas of focus:

  • Campus Consistency: Just as a reminder, the Aylesbury Community Space is still open for use daily between 8am – 4pm. You’ve been making great use of this space and it’s been great to hear the positive comments you’ve shared as well as the feedback comments for this space. As always if you need support with the recent news, you can reach out the SU Advice Centre or have a chat with me when I’m on campus (Tuesdays and Fridays). I’m working with SVO Kerri to see about the potential of an end of year event at the Aylesbury Campus. Please could you let us know what you’d like this to look like. There are suggestion papers across the Aylesbury campus, but you can also email bethany.jackson@bucks.ac.uk or visit me when I am on the campus. Thank you to the student groups who have already shared their thoughts on this. Please do keep sharing ideas. You can also check the What’s On page for what activities and opportunities are available and if you have suggestion or want to see something, make sure you reach out. There are strong conversations at the Uxbridge regarding parking. Thanks to SVO Wilkie for his work on campaigning and Jeanmarc for leading on these conversations. We hope to have an update soon. The discussion for the quiet/neuroinclusive space at the Nottingham delivery site are ongoing with plans to pick this up in full in the new academic year, however you can get involved with designing this space as part of the Mental Health Awareness week activities! So if you’ve got an idea you want to share or something you want to see, head to the SU office to see how you can be involved. There are also ongoing discussions about adding more green spaces/greenery to the campus, such as creating a small garden. If you have any ideas or want to be involved with this project, get in touch.

  • Mental Health and Wellbeing advocacy: We have celebrated Mental Health Awareness Week (with a two-week scheduled for the Nottingham Campus!). It’s been great to see many of you getting involved in the different ways and sharing your thoughts, ideas and knowledge as well. Remember to take 5 for you and we’ve got a range of support services on offer to support you.

  • Academic Experience: As always with supporting your academic experience, a reminder about if you are experiencing any issues with any area of your course, reasonable adjustments or the MyBNU app or Blackboard, please remembers to keep raising these and keep a log of what is happening. Make sure that when you raise this, you are providing as much detail as possible. I am also due to meeting with the Artificial Intelligence Working Group in the coming weeks. This upcoming meeting is about finalising the guidance/support for AI at BNU and if you have any points that you’d like me to raise, please let me know. Contact either su.vpew@bnu.ac.uk or reach out to surepresentation@bnu.ac.uk to share your insights! I also met with the Chief Student Experience Officer about free printing for students, and this is very much in the earlier stages of discussions but I hope to be able to update soon. If you have any questions or further ideas for this, please let me know.

We also celebrated sporting successes of the year at the AU dinner awards, congratulations to all the winners and nominees. It’s a great achievement. I also wanted to recognise the success of the Uxbridge Students who represented Bucks Students’ Union at our Varsity fixtures in March. They competed greatly in their sports and supported the other Bucks teams too! Kiera Payne, Steph Akor, Alice Kennedy, Mckenzie Edwards, Msgana G Michael. Across a range of sports these students helped Bucks secure the Roebuck Trophy for the 3rd consecutive year against Roehampton. Well done all!

You wanted to see more on your campuses during the day, particularly around lunchtime hours. We planned 63 events across the year and you can find out the activities via the what’s on page and the specific pages for the Uxbridge and Aylesbury campus.  You can also get involved with activities within the local area. If you have any suggestions of what activities or events you would like to see, please reach out to surecactivities@bucks.ac.uk.
