Students at Buckinghamshire New University are taking part in the Dreams Big Sleepout 2018 for charity Wycombe Homeless Connection at Wycombe Wanderers Football Club's Adams Park ground on Saturday 24 November.
All money raised from the 12hr sleepout goes to the charity, a community project of High Wycombe churches serving around 500 homeless or vulnerably-housed individuals each year.
Bucks Students' Union is supporting it as one of its RAG (Raise and Give) charities for the year, along with Samaritans of Hillingdon, and hopes to raise at least £750.
Katherine Frei, Activities Coordinator (Volunteering and Charity Fundraising) at Bucks Students’ Union, said: “Wycombe Homeless Connection is a fantastic local charity which supports homeless people throughout the year.
“As the charity is one of this year’s RAG charities for Bucks Students’ Union we feel particularly passionate about supporting its fundraising event. We have at least 20 student already signed up and aim to raise at least £750.”
Laura Bailey, studying BSc (Hons) Police Studies with Criminological Psychology, is among students taking part and said: "This is a chance to put ourselves in other people's shoes and while it will be a challenge it is something many people experience every day."
Wycombe Homeless Connection's overall aim is to help people rebuild their lives by assisting them not only to find or keep accommodation but also to develop skills to live independently and take more part in the community.
Seng Pin Lee, Communications Officer for Wycombe Homeless Connection, said: “Bucks New University's support means a lot to us.
“It is important that everyone is aware of homelessness, as it is closer than you think.
"In 2017, figures showed that at least 45,000 young people age between 18-24 faced homelessness in the UK but the true number could be well above 70,000.
"So, please support those who are taking part in the Dreams Big Sleepout 2018. The funds that are raised will go directly to help people who are facing homelessness in High Wycombe."
Bucks Students’ Union also brightens up the festive period for those being helped by the charity with Christmas hampers filled with useful items such as gloves, snacks and toiletries.
The Big Sleepout is sponsored by Dreams and Wycombe Wanderers is donating a free match ticket for any participant who raises sponsorship for the charity.
