Every year, we ask our members and staff to nominate a local charity for us to raise money for throughout the year through our Raise and Give (RAG) programme. A panel narrows these nominations down to six charities which we then ask students and staff to vote for in September – with the top two becoming our RAG charities for the year. This is a great opportunity for Bucks New University students and staff to tell us about the amazing work that local charities are doing, giving them the chance to receive a large sum of money at the end of the academic year.
Our two charities, for the 2017-18 academic year, were Wycombe Mind and Wycombe Rape Crisis, who both received £1,626 at our annual Union Awards, in May. Both charities were extremely grateful for the donations and told us about how the money will better the lives of many people in the community.
This year, we have listened to our members at the Uxbridge Campus who have asked for one of the RAG charities to be local to Uxbridge. We have taken this on board and are opening nominations to charities in both High Wycombe and Uxbridge in order to represent both campuses.
As a student having the opportunity to raise money for charity is important, but being able to raise money for charities within the local community allows you to see the changes that you have helped to make. Last year’s charities, Wycombe Mind and Wycombe Rape Crisis, are both organisations which you or your peers may have used directly, so the money that you raised not only had a positive impact on the community but also the student body. This is why it is vital that students have their say in the charities we support so be sure to nominate a cause you feel passionately about.
