Wednesday 11 October marked the first day of BUCS fixtures for the Bucks New University sports teams. We had 12 fixtures in total with 9 of them being played at home. This home support was a great advantage to have on the first day of fixtures.
The day started with Men's Hockey playing Chichester 2s at Cressex Astroturf. The team have had a great Fresher's intake and that showed in their 7-2 win. Women's Hockey followed and they managed to hold their own against Reading 4s, a tough opposition, to draw 3-3.
Both Netball 1s and Netball 2s played at home, both, unfortunately, losing against Chichester. However, Dana Okeke who plays for the Bucks second team put in an exceptional performance and stood out as Player of the Match for the second week running.
The Events Hall hosted some fantastic matches with both Women's and Men's Basketball playing at home. Women's Basketball kicked off the action playing Portsmouth. Despite a slow start, the Bucks girls dominated their opposition, winning by 60 points. The final score was a whopping 101-41! Shortly afterwards Men's Basketball took to the court. Despite a large number of freshers in the team, they worked really well together, finishing ahead of St Mary's 90-65.
Over at The Rye Bucks, FC 1s and 2s played their first game of the season. Bucks FC 1s defeated Surrey 3-1 and Bucks FC 2s put up a strong fight against St Mary's 4s but lost 2-3. Unfortunately, Bucks FC 3s and 5s also lost both of their away games to St George's 1s and Imperial 5s respectively.
Volleyball closed out the busy day of fixtures. Men's Volleyball travelled to Middlesex for their away match and Women's Volleyball stayed at home to play Chichester but both, unfortunately, lost 0-3.
For the first day of the BUCS season, the day ran smoothly! All the new Captains handled their roles and their teams exceptionally well. Hopefully, the great work from all the teams will continue over the coming weeks. Next week's fixtures bring a South East Conference Plate match for Bucks FC 4s. They will be playing at The Rye with a 13:30 so get down and show your support!
