This year we have worked closely with a local primary school who are within one of the highest deprivation sectors in the UK, Beechview Academy.
Since the pandemic the school have had an increase in behavioural issues which was already a matter they struggled with. They reached out to us and ask if some of our students that play sport could go and help with PE classes as a lot of the kids were keen to learn how to play Basketball and Netball but didn't know the rules .
We took students from both sports to teach them basic drills and how to play the game. Eloise, Georgia, Hannah and Georgia from Netball along with Dwyane and David from Basketball took a session with 60 year six students for two hours. For most of the group this was their first time in a coaching environment but we think they enjoyed it as much as the students did!
The Beechview students really took to ours and definitely had a favourite with men’s Basketball Captain Dwayne Wilson. After the session the equipment we took, we donated to the school so they now have three bags of Basketballs and Netballs to use and can start playing these sports more often. We look forward to working with Beechview again next year!
