I’m Lauren O’Shea, your new Vice President Education and Welfare!
I’ve taken over this role from Jenny Wade who put a lot of focus into extremely successful mental health awareness campaigns. Before officially stepping into the role on 1 July, Ben Parmar, President (Elect), Jimi Adeyinka, Vice President Student Involvement (Elect), and I were given the opportunity to attend various conferences, visiting our very own Missenden Abbey and hosting the Higher Education Academy event on retention. We then went to Birmingham to learn about the challenges and possible solutions to student engagement.
With both the old and new sabbatical teams (minus Jenny and Jimi), plus a number of Students’ Union staff, I was able to visit the Students’ Unions’ of Bristol, University of the West of England (UWE) and the University of Worcester on our annual Union Tour. I learnt a lot about how the institutions differ and how Bucks’ Students Union stands out for a number of reasons, with the main one being The Big Deal. The tour also gave me ideas for campaigns that I believe could be beneficial for our members here at Bucks.
Since starting the role I’ve sat on a number of committee meetings helping to plan for the academic year ahead. The Summer Staff Day allowed me to engage in and learn about each department of the Union, followed by a great team building activity where I had the chance to lead my new colleagues in making a car out of barrels, wood and string. I’ve been in my office a week and can already tell I’m going to love working here and can’t wait to get started working with all the students at Bucks in September!
