Our core aim, shared by all Youth Offending Teams nationally, is to prevent offending and re-offending by children and young people aged 10 to 18 years.
To support YP to set agreements and complete reparation tasks when they have recieved a Referrl Order from court: The Referral Order is the standard disposal for all young people who appear in court for the first time and have pleaded guilty. The young people sentenced to a referral order are referred to a panel that is composed of two members of the community who have volunteered and been trained to facilitate panel meetings. The Volunteer Panel Members meet with the young person, his or her parents and possibly the victim of the offence and based on a Restorative Justice Process look at who has been affected by the offence and how they have been affected. The panel then agree a plan of action with the young person, in the form of a contract, aimed at preventing further offending as well as helping to repair the harm caused by the offending behaviour.
Reparation tasks are given to most young people who have been involved in offending behaviour. It gives young people the opportunity to undertake an activity directly for the victim of the offence or if that is not appropriate the wider community in an effort to repair the harm caused by their offending. It is the role of the volunteer reparation supervisor/volunteer to ensure that young people are supervised during the sessions to support them with the tasks and ensure their safety. The role can also include supporting young people under the age of seventeen years who have been arrested need to be interviewed by police officers, about the offence they are alleged to have committed, during the interview they must be accompanied by their parents or another responsible person over the age of 18 years. If there is no one from the young person's family available to attend, the Youth Offending Service takes on that role. Volunteer Appropriate Adults are volunteers who have agreed to attend police interviews with young people.
