Overview

Join Epilepsy Action for a free practical 90-minute session designed specifically for student nurses and student midwives, where you'll hear about lived experiences and shared the best practice of how to care for an individual with epilepsy in your role as a nurse and/or midwife. The speakers have an extensive knowledge and experience of working in a nursing or midwifery role and will share their experiences when caring for a person with epilepsy.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions, yet it’s often overlooked in nursing and midwifery education. Many students leave university knowing very little about the condition, the care it requires, or the specialist roles available in this field.

Whether you're just starting out or nearing the end of your midwifery or nursing degree, this session will give you the essential, hands-on understanding of epilepsy that every future nurse or midwife should have.

What's Covered:
Seizure Types: Understand the different types of seizures and how they present beyond the textbook.
Myth-Busting: Break down common misconceptions.
Medication: Discover how epilepsy medications work, the potential teratogenic effect of some anti-seizure medications and what side effects to watch for.
First Aid, Safety & SUDEP: Learn lifesaving first aid, safety protocols, and how to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.
The importance of Epilepsy Specialist Nurses: Get inspired by the diverse, specialist role of ESNs across patient pathways.
Meet Epilepsy Action: Learn how we support both healthcare professionals and those living with epilepsy and how you can get involved.
