On 16 July, Bucks Students’ Union proudly hosted the first of what will become a series of blood donation sessions in partnership with the NHS Blood and Transplant team.
The initiative was driven by Grace from the Paramedic Society, who wanted to raise awareness of the vital importance of blood donation and show how one simple act can make a life-changing—and life-saving—difference.
The response was incredible. A total of 95 people donated blood in a single day, with the potential to help save up to 285 lives. Every donation counts, and with just one donation able to save up to three lives, the impact of the event was truly remarkable.
Reflecting on the success of the day, Grace said:
"The blood donation event exceeded all of our expectations. It was incredible to see so many students and staff come together to support such an important cause, and the response showed just how willing people are to make a difference when given the opportunity. As someone donating for the first time myself, it was amazing to see how simple the process was, and I hope this is just the beginning of regular blood donation sessions at Bucks. Every donation has the potential to save lives, and I’m really proud to have been part of bringing this event to the university."
The need for blood donors has never been greater, particularly for those with B negative, O negative, and the Ro blood subtype. NHS Blood and Transplant is also encouraging more donors of Black heritage to come forward, as these donations are especially important in supporting people living with sickle cell disease.
Following the overwhelming success of the first session, there will be two more opportunities to donate at Bucks on 10 September and 15 December. Book your appointment HERE and be part of something extraordinary—your donation could save a life.
