Bethany's Monthly Update - July

Welcome to the first update of my 25/26 elected officer term. Each month, I will be aiming to provide an update about what I have been up to that month.

The beginning of July saw the start of new elected officer term, where we have spent the past few weeks in various training and introductions with different departments developing relationships and skills and sharing knowledge for the year ahead. There are lots of exciting plans to come so keep an eye out!

You asked for sports? We now have a table tennis on the campus, this is installed on the 3rd floor for you to when you like. Just make sure to pop into the office to collect the bat and balls, don’t forgot your student ID. We continue to explore dates for yoga on campus, (let us know which days suit you) and we can use the external facilities within a short distance to the campus, get in contact to learn how.

We are building a community garden, “Rusty’s Retreat” where you can help grow vegetables, learn valuable skills, or have a quiet space to relax. In the long run this project will be home to various crops where you can take these away to make some fresh dishes, share with your mates or donating to various projects. We have the opportunity to paint this space too, so if you are interested in making your mark, get in touch (volunteering@bnu.ac.uk) to share your design.
I continue to have discussions regarding the quiet space at Uxbridge, which is a focus point I carried over from the previous year. Whilst the discussions have been ongoing, there are lots of moving parts and progress is being made, we are waiting for confirmation of a room to move this too. I hope to be able to update more soon.

I am consistently planning ahead for this academic year, using my areas of focus to guide the direction I aim to move in. These are:

  • Campus consistency (ensuring provision across all campuses is consistent with other – resources, facilities etc.)

  • Wellbeing and mental health advocacy and events (signposting support services and quiet spaces)

  • Academic experience (ensuring the service students receive is what is expected, they have support, academic integrity guidance/support/consistency, opportunities, and communication across the board)

There is lots being planned, and some are already taking place. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates.

The final week of July saw Graduation. I, alongside my fellow officers, attended the ceremonies across the week. It was fantastic celebrating with so many students, and great to see their successes. It was an incredible week and the work the staff put in was greatly appreciated, well done and congratulations to everyone involved.

I will be posting a short version of these updates on my Instagram, alongside any quick updates. As always, if you need anything please reach out.

Until next month,
Bethany
