Hey Everyone, my name is Liv and I'm your Women’s Executive Officer for this year. I am a third year criminology student and also the captain of Bucks Women’s Hockey team. I am so excited to be representing you all and have some amazing plans in the works. I am looking forward to putting on some great events for you and creating a network for women where we can support and socialise with each other whilst working together to make lives better for everyone at Bucks.
Round up of the year
Hey everyone! Liv here, your Women's Executive Officer at BNU. As the year comes to an end, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my time as your Women's Officer.
First and foremost, during the last year , I aimed to raise and discuss issues that women face on a daily basis. I've been asking important questions about what we currently do and what we could do more to how we can support and help women. One of my main aims this year was to promote the University's report and support system and other resources available to students. It's been my mission to spread the word of how important it is to report and the change reporting can make.
We also had two successful Self Defence seminars hosted by ACT, where women had the opportunity to learn valuable skills to better protect themselves. I hope these seminars continue in the upcoming years, as they can truly be life-saving.
Additionally, I hosted a tea and chat session where I connected with many incredible women. We discussed important topics and had a good old chat. We also made sanitary bags, handed out inspirational quotes, and pledged against gender-based violence by putting our handprints on the wall.
Lastly, we had a super fun International Women's Day! We organized a Women in Business and Law conference, enjoyed some exciting activities in Beeches, handed out flowers, and received free goodies from the police to help keep ourselves safe on nights out.
Representing women this past year has been an absolute pleasure, and I will continue to do so in my everyday life. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey - Jess, Tash, Imo, the SU and University staff, as well as my friends and family. I couldn't have done it without you!
What am I working on?
Hi everyone! Its Liv here your Women's Executive Officer.
Since my last update, we have had another fantastic self-defence seminar hosted by ACT, where it was amazing to see you, guys learning how to protect yourself in the best way possible. During this seminar, we focused on three main points - Prevention, Action, Legislation, and Practicality. During the prevention section, we looked at safety advice for nights out and general safety whilst doing everyday activities. During the Action section, we discussed the psychology of fear and the 5 Fs: fight, flight, freeze, flop, and friend. During Legislation, we discussed what we can and cannot do during self-defence, and finally, during the practice, we focussed on strikes, breakaways and went through the basics of grappling.
Following my recent Executive Officer team meeting, I have been working in the background to progress some of my campaign ideas, too! I have been working with both the Students’ Union and the University to discuss my student safety campaign and how we can raise awareness of the importance of reporting.
I am also working on getting a safe space in the Students’ Union Venue or The Lounge. This space will allow people to take a quiet moment in a safe and comfy space rather than the only current option, which is the first aid room. Within this safe space, I wish to include posters or leaflets that discuss the options someone has to report an incident or receive any support they may need be this internally or externally from the University. Additionally, I have been in discussions surrounding International Women's Day, so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please reach out so we can make this year’s International Women's the best celebration possible. The best way to contact me is through emailing Liv.Ross@bnu.ac.uk
