Varsity is an event that is held once a year giving our teams the opportunity to compete against their counterparts from another institution. The University that wins the most points during this event will be crowned the winners and given the Roebuck Cup to display until we next meet. Our Varsity opponents are Roehampton Uni and we have been competing against them since 2013. Each University takes turns in hosting, with the event in 2022 being hosted by us. The event, usually held over a week, culminates in a day where supporters from Roehampton and Bucks watch the bulk of the fixtures being played with the last fixture finishing at 10:00pm. Then the day finishes at the Students' Union Bar where both Universities' staff, players and supporters come together to watch the cup ceremony.
We were all looking forward to the possibility of Varsity 2021 against Roehampton going ahead as usual, but with COVID-19 restrictions in place, it was looking uncertain. Fortunately, in accordance with Government guidelines and the guidelines from the relative sporting bodies, we were able to play several friendly fixtures.
Your Vice President Student Involvement, Tom, pointed out in the lead up to the big day, "It’s been 448 days since the last Bucks team took the field, despite there not being spectators, we're still playing for the win." Even with Varsity being a different affair this year and no spectators being able to attend, we’re so proud of our sports clubs who managed to play great games across the board with the final result being, Buckinghamshire New University 8 – Roehampton 2.
A big thank you to Neal Reynolds and all the Sports Therapy students who provided their support and help on the day and thanks to all those committee members who kept their clubs going through an incredibly difficult year - we're so proud of all of your hard work.
And a big well done to all our teams who played!
Don’t forget you can read the results from all the games in our 2021 Varsity.
