The Union Council meeting on 23 April 2026 brought together officers, trustees, student reps and staff for an evening focused on updates, discussion and planning. Chair Sameer Pathan opened the session by welcoming attendees, introducing the newly elected officers and setting out the agenda, with members expressing appreciation for the support received during election campaigns.
A major item was the University’s proposed rebrand. The marketing team presented “Rise up” as a potential new strapline, linking it to the Varsity theme used earlier in the year. Students shared mixed reactions: some found it simple and versatile, while others questioned its connection to the University’s identity or felt it resembled commercial slogans. A few suggested drawing more on institutional history. Overall, the room rated the idea around 7/10, emphasising the need for authenticity and student involvement.
Officer updates covered bursary progress, WiFi improvements, parking arrangements at Uxbridge, Eden access discussions, and the success of Seize the Day activities. Upcoming events included What’s Your Blood Type, Guide Dogs, Rounders 4 RAG and the July Blood Donation Bank. Additional updates celebrated new community and quiet spaces, encouraged reporting issues with MyBNU, and confirmed approval for extra student uniforms.
The Trustee Board reported strong financial performance, updated governance policies, and the election of new student trustees. Bucks will host the Southern Students’ Unions Conference, and celebrations marked a Varsity “three peat” and a tenth consecutive WhatUni shortlist.
CEO Tristan Tipping outlined the development of the new Strategic Plan, shaped by student and stakeholder feedback, with no objections raised to the proposed priorities. Guest speakers highlighted financial support, the NHS Low Income Scheme and cost‑of‑living initiatives.
Before closing, Sarah Jackson, head of people and development addressed concerns about missed free meals and other student queries. Sameer Pathan acknowledged the contributions of staff and officers who ensured the meeting ran smoothly. Key upcoming dates were shared, and the meeting concluded with confirmation that the next Union Council will be held on 21 May 2026 at 5pm.
