At its core, a Students' Union is a representative and supportive body. We’re here to bring you an enhanced university experience, make sure your voice is heard, and support you in getting more involved and, ultimately, making life better for students at Bucks.  Whether it’s running events, supporting your wellbeing, helping with academic issues, or campaigning for change,  BNU is the only university in the UK to offer FREE access to a huge range of activities and opportunities to enrich your time with us, all thanks to The Big Deal.

At Nottingham, your Students’ Union office is based on the ground floor near the library and is your go-to space for support, activities, and opportunities to get involved. We’re typically on-site from Monday to Sunday (except Friday), 9am-5pm, but please keep an eye on our noticeboards and social media channels for any latest updates. You can follow us on our social channels and you can access these through Link Tree.

We run recreational trips, additional skills sessions, recreational sport, volunteering opportunities, and a range of societies, including ones relevant to students at Nottingham. Whether you're here for business, digital marketing, or accounting-related courses, there’s something for you. Zey oversees activities on our Nottingham Campus, organising recreational events and skills development sessions that help our students make the most of their university life and enhance their employability. They work closely with students and the Training and Development team to deliver and create engaging opportunities. Just head to the Students' Union on campus or email  zeynep.saner@bnu.ac.uk for more information.

We also run the Student Rep Scheme, giving you the chance to make a positive impact on your course and your campus and to be recognised for the work you do. From raising feedback to helping shape the student experience, it’s a rewarding way to get involved and get rewarded up to £100. Chandrika oversees representation at Nottingham, supporting and training student reps to ensure they feel heard, supported, and empowered. She coordinates the Student Rep Scheme, supports the Advice Centre, and delivers wellbeing initiatives and campaigns, working with the elected officer team to enhance the student experience and ensure effective representation across the Union’s services. Just head to the Students' Union on campus or email chandrika.dutta@bnu.ac.uk for more information.

We also have Bethany our Vice President Education and Welfare Officer who focuses on the educational and wellbeing experiences of our members whilst studying at BNU. She is mainly based at the Uxbridge and Aylesbury Campuses, but her work encompasses representing the voice of the students, across the Aylesbury, Nottingham, Oxford, and Uxbridge Campuses, and making sure these are represented on a larger scale. She is also a part of the Representation team and works with the Advice Centre too to run campaigns across campuses which aim to boost positive mental health and ensure that your voices are heard. You can reach her at any time by sending an email to su.vpew@bnu.ac.uk.

Lastly, we have an independent and confidential Advice Centre, offering support across all campuses. At Nottingham, our Representation & Welfare Coordinator is here to help you access advice with trained advisors through online appointments. The Advice Centre provides support and guidance on a wide range of issues such as financial hardship, accommodation and course-based issues. They can support with course related areas such as: academic misconduct allegations, extension request advice and mitigiating circumstance applications.

If they can’t help directly, they’ll always make sure you’re signposted to the right place. Appointments can be held over the phone or via Microsoft Teams, whatever works best for you. You can reach our team Monday to Friday by sending an email suadvice@bnu.ac.uk or calling 01494 603 016.

You’re never limited in the support you can get!

As a student at BNU you are automatically a member of a strong and well-connected Students' Union that ranks highly due to our focus on making students lives better at all campuses.

You’re just as much a part of the Bucks Students' Union community as anyone else, and we’re here to make sure you feel that.  You name it, we do it. For more information, or to see what you can get involved with, check out our posterboards, social media or simply pop into the office or head to our what's on page or simply call us on  01157950014.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve hosted a variety of events to help everyone feel welcome here in campus, to show our faces and let students get to know the Students’ Union while we get to know you too. By building those early connections, we could all collaboratively build a strong sense of community.

We kicked off the term with our welcome activities, and it was lovely to meet and get into conversation with so many of you. During the events, students could try their luck with the spinning wheel or show off their aiming skills with darts to win freebies and snacks. Our goodie bags were filled with helpful flyers and essential information, so if yours is still lying around somewhere, have a quick dig through and give them a read.

Alongside the welcome and induction events, we also celebrated culture in a creative way, where students came together the day before Diwali to craft paper lanterns and try their hand at rangoli-inspired stencil art, painting tote bags and cards with traditional patterns. The room was full of colour and conversation. The beautiful works of arts were then displayed the next day to celebrate the Festival of Lights and fill our Student Hub with vibrant colours and cultural richness. Students came together in this joyful social event with lively music, decorations, and delicious hot food.

The following events took a spookier turn as we prepared for Halloween. Our creepy crafts sessions had students stencilling eerie designs on tote bags, cutting up paper bats, and crafting creepy creatures. The students truly showed their creativity, and the campus looked fantastically haunted with spider webs and ghouls all around.

We’ve loved seeing so many of you getting involved and already planning even more opportunities to bring everyone together. We’ll hit off November with a career focus, which will help students elevate their professional profile and develop essential employability skills. Check the what’s on page on the Students' Union website or our social medias for all upcoming events.

Work that has been done so far by the Representation Team

We’ve hit the ground running with excitement, ready to make your university life even better! To start with hey my name is Chandrika Dutta, please call me Chans (Representation and Welfare Coordinator). Although you might often see me as the face of the Representation Team, it’s truly a group effort made up of many dedicated individuals working hard behind the scenes to support students. From BNU’s Uxbridge campus, Natasha Neal Senior Student Engagement and Welfare Coordinator and Bethany Jackson Vice President Education and Welfare recently visited to meet and introduce themselves to the students and staff at the Nottingham campus. After being introduced to a wide range of students and their concerns, we introduced the Issue Tracker to record and monitor all student feedback effectively. This has proven to be one of the most efficient ways to keep track of the issues/ concerns or discussions raised by students across campus. It’s been encouraging to see students coming forward to share their concerns about a variety of areas.

Here are some of the concerns that the team is dealing with

  • Students shared concerns about not having the latest edition books for their coursework. I raised this with professors, and a list of required books has been submitted. The librarian is now processing these requests soon our shelves will be stocked with new and updated editions to better support students’ learning.
  • There were no bins (general or recycle) available inside the classrooms for disposing of food. The team took the initiative to contact the relevant members at the university, and bins have now been installed in classrooms followed by regular checks after each class to change the bins, corridors area and recycles bins are on the way.
  • Previously, there were no facilities for loan laptops for students. Now, after it has been raised to the SU, a meeting has been proceeded with the facilities team, now there are loan laptops that can be used on campus for up to 6 hours.
  • There was no baby feeding room on campus. The team followed up with the university, and work has now begun to establish one.
  • Students requested a microwave and kettle. It is followed up with the facilities department, and a positive outcome is expected soon.
  • Students have been repeatedly changing classes due to issues with heaters and HDMI connections. These concerns were escalated to the right team and monitored closely by Chans. As a result, heater signs have been added, and therefore, there are now two screen connection options either by bytellow software without HDMI wires, or an organized HDMI setup that won’t disrupt the classroom.
  • Students wanting to have a sitting arrangement outside, matter has been escalated, and it is on the progress status.
  • Students stated that the screens to see slides are not properly visible, the team has escalated this to the facility member and now the screens are working perfect.
  • Concerns regarding teaching quality, reading study materials of the slides and slow response to student queries have been raised and escalated to the Heads of Academics for monitoring and improvement. There will a process of identifying lecturers, regular teaching and development trainings.
  • Concerns of students regarding extension, mitigating circumstances, ielts exams has all been escalated to the right teams and students are being followed up by the university team members.
  • Concerns regarding the quality and quantity of food at the canteen have been addressed. A suggestion sheet has been placed at reception to gather students’ preferred food options. Based on the most popular student choices, the Facilities Team is working closely with the Students’ Union to ensure your voices are heard. Together, we’re exploring ways to bring hot food, fresh coffee, and a selection of snacks to campus!
  • Concerns regarding the canteen looked bare and chilli, but good news! We now have two big smart LED TVs where you can watch movies, play music, or just enjoy a cosy vibe. The space feels much livelier now, and after discussions with the facilities team, heating will also be installed in the next few weeks to make it even more comfortable.
  • Concerns regarding lift accessibility for disabled students and the need for more toilets. The work on the lift is scheduled to begin in a few days, and discussions are also underway about adding more toilets.
  • Students also shared their interest in having a microwave available to heat up their meals the positive outcome is on the way within the next few days.
  • Students have concerns on pressing buzzers every time they come in and write their name, time, student ID which really take time on weekends due to more students present and students miss their attendance.
  • Students would like to see academic leads on the weekends to discuss serious issues regarding the modules the module leaders are not available at the weekends, discussion are in progress.
  • Students have raised concerns about the sign-in sheet at the reception being labeled “OBC Student”. Raised it with the right team and now it has been changed to BNU-MCC students.
  • Students have raised concerns about the attendance recording process. Although professors mark them as present on Blackboard, some students are finding that their attendance records still show them as absent and vice versa as well on when they are marked absent.
  • Student ID cards not received, having problem to do anything on campus. Been asked to come back every week, work has been on progress.

These are some of the concerns raised by our wonderful students have been so thoughtful and detailed, and many positive changes have only been possible because you took the time to share your feedback. If you have a problem, have already raised an issue but haven’t heard back, or simply don’t know where to start, come and speak to me. We can work together to find a solution. I always strive to build strong and supportive relationships with both staff and students, as we are all part of one team working together to make BNU a better and more successful place for everyone. So please, don’t be afraid to reach out.

We’ve been on a mission to introduce societies to Nottingham, and this is where you come in. As of now, there aren’t any societies on our campus, which means students have a unique opportunity to help shape the very first ones and take the lead in building their communities.

But what exactly are they?

If you’re not familiar with university societies, think of them as student-led communities or clubs where people with shared interests, hobbies, and identities can connect and explore their passions together. Societies are at the core of university life and one of the best ways to make your life at university more interesting, as well as a great way to meet new people who share similar interests and widen your social network beyond just your course mates.

Sounds exciting? Let’s get started!

To start a society, you’ll need three committee members: chair, vice chair, and finance manager. Once your team is ready, the Students’ Union will guide you through the next steps to get everything up and running.

The student-led aspect is what makes societies so special. Students have the voice and power to shape their own experiences. This gives you a chance to organise your events, make decisions as a team, and develop those essential leadership, organisational, and events management skills which also looks great on your CV.

Don’t worry, the Students' Union will be with you every step of the way, offering support, guidance, and assistance whenever you need. Societies can also apply for up to £500 to assist with the development of your society, from organising events, attending trips, or inviting guest speakers.

Looking for inspiration?

Societies can be about anything you’d like, whether it’s your culture, academic course, faith, or any other aspect of your life that you’re passionate about, such as sports, creative hobbies, or interests like anime or gaming. Every idea matters.

You can also take a look here for already existing societies on other campuses: https://www.bucksstudentsunion.org/activities/socs/startasociety/

So, what do you say? If you’ve ever thought, “I wish there was a society for that…”, now’s the time to make it happen.

For any questions, information, or inspiration, pop into the Students’ Union office in Nottingham or email your Student Activities Coordinator: zeynep.saner@bnu.ac.uk

The Nottingham team is working hard to bring a range of employability focused opportunities to the campus. We are setting up a schedule of careers workshops, CV sessions, professional headshot opportunities and many more. These sessions will help students build valuable skills, strengthen their professional profiles, and prepare for life after university, or progress in their current careers. With the support of the Careers team, where students can always contact Career Success for tailored advice and support, there will be a mix of online and in-person sessions delivered for Nottingham students also.

In addition to sessions and workshops, there are also invaluable resources that you can find by surfing the employability page. Here are a few:

JobShop
A lot of students actively look for jobs during their time in university to tackle the cost-of-living crisis or to boost their current income. To help students find the right opportunities, our JobShop includes listings of local Nottingham-based (keep an eye on the titles) part-time roles across a range of industries, not just retail and bar work. It’s a great way to earn money and gain experience for your CV while skipping the hassle of scrolling through multiple tabs of job websites.

Visit bucksstudentsunion.org/employability/jobshop to browse the latest listings and find something that suits your schedule.

Free online courses
Looking to give your CV an extra boost? The free online courses section on the employability page is a curated list of resources which Nottingham students can access from anywhere, anytime, completely free of charge. These courses are a great opportunity to strengthen your employability and enhance your CV by building up essential skills, from a variety of subjects and areas, and even earn certificates to display your achievements.

Handshake
All BNU students are encouraged to use Handshake, which is an innovative and effective career portal designed to help students connect with employers, discover opportunities, and access tailored career support. Through Handshake, which is also available as a mobile app, you can easily make use of the Career Success Service, making it simpler and faster to get the guidance needed to plan your next career steps.
